CDs
Update:
02/02/2008 - The new multi-cd is ready. It includes
Catasetum, Cattleya and Laelia, and
these are not going to be available individually after July 1, 2008. By this date we are acheduled to have ready
the second multi-cd which will include Amazon, Rupicolous Orchids and Orchids of Rio de Janeiro. The multi-cds
present several advantages: 1- they are commercially made (on par with what you buy in stores), which means 4-color
printing and poly-wrapping, among other things; 2- they are bi-lingual (English and Portuguese); 3- they have a
nice autoload screen and other features like wallpapers that are free for personal use; 4- navigation has been
improved; and 5- they have been thoroughly checked for typos and inconsistencies. They also cost less than the
individual CDs if purchased separately. Here are some pictures:

Box and CD view:
This is the cover view on the box and CD. The CD of course is round, but have essentially the same information.
Everything is printed in real colors. |

Back cover view:
This is the back cover of the box. The picture shows Laelia
purpurata in the natural habitat. |
The individual contents stay basically the same,
but with thorough revision and navigation tweaks.
The following info is still mostly pertinent.
_______________
Since a long time ago I have been asked to provide some additional information about my lectures, so people would
be able to recall what was said and shown at the presentation. As just having something written wouldn't do it,
as my presentations are basically slide shows where we interact during the lecture, I decided to go one up and
prepare something that could be kept for a long time and also provide most of the information given at the lecture.
Ended up that this task proved to be an incredible amount of work, but I hope the result would please everyone
wishing to share my words and experiences with the subjects I talk about.
I decided to make these CDs in HTML format, that
is, like a website. With this, they are platform and also browser independent. I double-checked them on PCs (Windows
and Linux) and Macs using Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Konqueror, Galeon and Mozilla, but they should work flawlessly
with any other browser or operating system. The recommended resolution is 1024 x 768 for the PC, as there won't
be any scrolling and the full page will be visible as such; with lower resolutions, some scrolling is necessary
but otherwise works fine. I also decided not to include any sounds or anything else that would distract from the
subject, as I think that when you want to read and absorb some information silence is a must. The basic layout
is of a book, with a navigation vertical bar on the left where there are buttons for NEXT, LAST, PREVIOUS, FIRST
and INDEX, so viewers are able to go to the desired page and stay there as long as they wish.

Orchids from the Brazilian Amazon
This lecture shows the basic different
habitats in the Brazilian Amazon and the most interesting or showy orchids to be found there. Lost of habitat pictures.
You will see that orchid distribution in the Amazon is not like what most people imagine, and that there are extremely
interesting plants very well adapted to their surroundings and pollinators. |
The genus Catasetum
in Brazil
Catasetum is a very interesting genus that occurs on almost every area
of Brazil, but the majority of species are from the Amazon. Here, we discuss the different habitats where Catasetum plants live and picture most of the showy or recently described species that most people
never saw before. Seeing the different habitats is good to give us some hints of how to cultivate these plants. |

The genus Laelia in
Brazil
Laelia is a genus that comprises a very large percentage of extremely showy orchids. This lecture
shows most of the different species in their habitats and color forms of the most showy and varied ones. Also,
there are areas shown here that don't even exist anymore due to iron ore extraction in the mountains or cutting
of the forest. The habitat pictures are thus a reference for the future. |
The genus Cattleya in
Brazil
Cattleya includes some of the most beautiful of all orchids, and for
many they are the "real" orchids. The genus is practically divided in unifoliate and bifoliate cattleyas,
although this is very simplistic to say the least. Brazil has a few of the unifoliates, but is home of most bifoliates.
Here, we visit many of the different habitats where the plants grow and also show several of the most outstanding
forms of the species. |

Screenshots
|
| The lectures are all in the same format, for the sake
of uniformity of the series, the basic difference being that the navigation bars on the left are color coded according
to the subject (same on CD cover). After an introductory page, you go to an Abstract page and then an Index page,
where the subsequent 100 pages are all linked. This Index page is available on each page, at any stage in the lecture.
You can get to it with one click of the mouse and from there to any desired page without having to actually follow
the order of the lecture. This is useful when you just want to review some picture a few pages ago. Some examples
are shown following. |
 |
|
This is how the lectures start, with a relief map explaining
what we are going to see and the basic distribution of the area or genus that is the subject. This is an actual
screenshot from 'Orchids from the Brazilian Amazon'. |

This is a screenshot of the Laelia lecture.
In this case, we are seeing and discussing one of the very showy color forms of Laelia purpurata,
Brazil's National Flower. |
 |
Ever wondered how rupiculous laelias grow in nature? This is the kind of habitat picture to expect in these lectures.
Most of them were never shown before the actual lectures, and most species were never seen in the habitat anywhere
else before, so I hope you will enjoy. This one is also from the Laelia lecture,
and we discuss a lot about what we are seeing and how to get hints for cultivation of these extremely well adapted
plants.
