News and Updates:
June 30, 2009
- We added another species to the Brazilian Orchids section. Cattleya nobilior comes as a complement considering that we already have C. walkeriana and a comparison
page between the two. A few more
website "gremlins" have also been found and corrected.
June 28, 2009
- We are at the peak of Cattleya leopoldii
season right now. Purpuratas and tenebrosas are also blooming, but as we are growing them under shade cloth the
rain is damaging the flowers too much, which is a real pity. flowers with heavy substance, such as the leopoldiis,
seem not to get any damage. Here are some new leopoldiis, hope you all enjoy.
- The Price List was also updated, with the inclusion of several high-quality items that we mostly have
in small quantities, so it might be an unique opportunity to get them. As always, out of stock items have been
removed.
May 24, 2009
- Too many shows and trips since the last update,
every week in a row. So, finally I am able to add a few more pictures of plants that flowered during this period.
Enjoy.
- The Price List was also updated, with removal of several out of stock items. Several of the recently added
items are now out of stock, others still available in small quantities.
April 16, 2009
- As Cattleya intermedia
is in full flower now, nothing better than populate the site with pictures of these gorgeous flowers. Interestingly,
as temperatures rise flowers open faster and smaller than before. Cattleya intermedia
looks to be almost as prone to this as Laelia
purpurata, seems that the more to
the South the species comes the more influenced the flowers are by temperature. As always, hope you enjoy.
- The Price List was also updated, with removal of several out of stock items. A few of the new items are
gone or are going out of stock, so it seems that we got some very popular plants this time.
April 13, 2009
- At this point, about 80% of the buds are open,
we just can't have everything open at once and in one picture. Enjoy, and BTW the highest quality ones have been
removed and are kept in a separate area as they are going to travel to Houston for the Show and AOS Trustee's Meeting
next weekend.
- The Price List have been updated, some items are going very fast and thus have been removed. Thanks everybody.
April 5, 2009
- Cattleya intermedia
is starting to bloom in full force, and at this point we have roughly 20% of the buds open. It is going to be a
mess (shame on me for not repotting on time) but a beautiful mess indeed as plants are blooming with up to nine
flowers per spike. A few of the good ones are in the top banner, replacing the recent amethystoglossas.
March 31, 2009
- The late colder conditions in Florida this Winter
affected flowering in interesting ways, and the Cattleya
nobilior plants are finishing just
now with flowers lasting an average of six or more weeks. Loddigesiis had a spread out season, with several still
in flower now but it was even more interesting what happened with the intermedias. We thought we would have an
early season as quite a few started to flower in January, but now the bulk of the plants are opening the buds on
a late season. Other bifoliates like granulosas, amethystoglossas and schillerianas seemed less affected. On the
unifoliate front, warneris totally mis-fired. Let's see now what happens with the purpuratas, which are about to
start in a month or so.
- The Division List have been updated, together with the Price List.
February 9, 2009 (update: Feb 22,
2009)
- The Cattleya nobilior
plants are flowering now, at this point we have about a couple dozen coeruleas in flower. A nice sight indeed.
The pumilas are finishing, loddigesiis are at the peak and intermedias are just starting. If you are around Central
Florida, this is a good time to plan a visit. Update: at this point, we still have a few in bud but it is probably
as good a group photo as we'll ever get.
 |
Laelia pumila 'Marcello Miranda'
We got this pumila awarded an HCC/AOS. Interesting is that this was the lightest
colored of the seedlings we flowered this season, but shape is really good. By the time of the judging at the Tamiami
Show, the flower was already three weeks old, and for about the same period of time have had the pollinia removed.
The plant is still in flower now, which makes it about a month old, so it is impressive how long these flowers
last, even without the pollinia. |
|
- The Price List has also been updated, with the removal of out of stock items.
- We also have ready yet another species comparison and identification page. This one is about the remaining three of the hadrolaelias
(Hadrolaelia, Cattleya, Sophronitis), which are alaorii, jongheana and sincorana. With this, the group is finished, and I might just add
a page with all the six together in the future. As always, please take a look and let me know if the information and format are useful so we can improve whatever needed.
January 25, 2009
- The Price List has been updated, with the removal of out of stock items and the addition of a few high-quality
items. These are available in limited quantities, but they add to a current list that we think is the best we ever
had.
- We also have ready another species comparison and identification page. This one deals with three of the laelias (Hadrolaelia, Cattleya, Sophronitis), which are dayana, praestans and pumila. Hope this is useful, and if you have any comments please
let
me know. I am actually asking for
some comments, as for the first time I am feeling that the page width might not be enough for three species. It
was good for side-by-side comparison of two species, but three... maybe not. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy.
January 1, 2009
- The updated Division List is now available, and
as always just send me an e-mail if
you want to take a look. A couple of pictures were also included on the updated Price List.
December 29, 2008
- I just replaced the pictures on the photo bar
above with some great Laelia pumila plants that are flowering right now. These are very good
growers, and some of them will be featured on the update of the division list which will be online on the next
few days. And for the ones of you that haven't been scrolling down this page for some time, just take a look on
the other plants that have been flowering for us this year. Hope you enjoy.
A great 2009 for everybody.
December 22, 2008
- The Price List have been updated, and this is likely the most significant update since we started the
site some 8 years ago. This update includes more than 50 new items, mostly in the Cattleya and
Laelia selected lists. There are several reasons to make such a significant update this time of
the year, among them being the fact that we just came back from Brazil and brought a lot of new stuff. Besides,
as we are doing several presentations and shows in the Winter, this gives people a chance to pre-order plants.
And finally, even people living in colder areas can make plans for the Spring. In the meantime, we found out that
shipping, even to colder areas, is quite safe in-between cold fronts and we monitor the weather forecast very closely
because of this. Selected cattleyas include several Cattleya
eldorado, leopoldii, guttata and walkeriana
among many others that customers keep asking for years. Don't forget to check the selected laelias and the other
pages as there is new stuff there too. Hope you enjoy.
And as always in this time of the year, we would
to thank customers and friends for your support throughout the years and wish all a very optimistic and positive
2009.
Merry Christmas, happy Holidays.
October 14, 2008
- Our Division List has been updated, so just let
me know if there is any interest in viewing it. I added essentially several selected bifoliate cattleyas.
October 10, 2008
- The Presentations page has been updated, with some reorganizing of subjects and a new one ready to go and
tested.
- The Price List have been updated, with the inclusion, among other things, of selected seedling batches
of Cattleya intermedia, C.
leopoldii and Laelia purpurata, These come with very high expectations, and are available in very small quantities. Out
of stock items have also been removed.
June 19, 2008
- Just a quick note to show some of the spectacular
plants flowering right now at Miranda Orchids. These are all first blooming seedlings, hope you enjoy.
 |
| And here we have one of the watercolors that was added
to the Botanical
Illustration page. It depicts the
regular color form of Laelia dayana, a very interesting Hadrolaelia species.
Size is 30 x 27 cm. |
|
June 16, 2008
- A new Division List is available upon request.
The list has grown a lot, and this time includes, among other things, the new Laelia purpurata
that are just now flowering.
- The Botanical Illustration page has been updated, with the inclusion of new paintings. More news soon on the subject.

- We still have a few specimens left on what is probably
the last batch that will be available of our book "Orchids
from the Brazilian Amazon". For
the ones that don't know the book, it was released by the time of the 15th WOC in Rio de Janeiro on 1996, and deals
with the different habitats of the Brazilian part of the Amazon. It also gives an overview of the orchids to be
found on these different types of forests. It has 192 pages and lots of photographs. The price is the same publisher's
price of US$ 100.00, but this price now is postpaid and of course you get a signed copy. For these, we will still
include a copy of our "Orchids
from the Brazilian Amazon" CD
which is being discontinued soon in favor of the second multi-lecture CD that is in the final stages of completion. |
June 08, 2008
- The Price List has been updated, with the inclusion of several new items. These are scattered throughout
the whole list, so it is not just a limited update.
- A new presentation is ready, number 7 on the Presentations page list, which is the remake of our Laelia presentation. It was tested at the St. Augustine Orchid Society this past week, with very
positive feedback.
May 25, 2008
- We finally have our Presentations page on the site, I have been working on this for some time as people always ask what are
the themes and for a brief description of presentations available. This is even more relevant as I are now in the
AOS speaker's list, although I have been busy enough in the last twenty years even before that. And since we shifted
from slide to computer presentations recently, several ones have been added to the old ones that have also been
redone for digital. New ones are also being put together, as digital allows a lot more flexibility than slides.
- The Price List has been updated, with the removal of out of stock items. New items will be available in
the next couple of days.
- As other news, the special list for the WOC is
no longer valid (link removed) and a new division list is being completed in the next day or so; this one includes
Laelia purpurata. This list will be updated more frequently as we photograph
a lot of plants that have been flowering recently.
April 15, 2008
- We have been having some incredible flowerings
of Cattleya intermedia on recent years, and for the delight of the Cattleya species lovers among you we are including some pictures from lest year's season. Not that
many pictures this year as I was in Brazil during the season's peak. However, some more incredible intermedias
flowered for the first time this year, and these we were able to photograph. So here it goes, hope you enjoy!
- From 2007:
and from 2008:
April 13, 2008
- The Price List has been updated, with the addition of several new items and also several items that were
removed due to shortage were also reinstated. This is another major update, consequence of our recent trip to Brazil.
As always, quantities of some items are limited, so in doubt please send us an e-mail or mention substitutes on
orders.
- During this recent trip to Brazil, a couple of
very interesting habitats were visited and photographed, so an update on the Brazilian Orchids page will follow
in due time. See you at the Redlands Festival next month.
February 07, 2008
- The Price List has been updated, with the addition of new items.
- Our new Division List is now ready. If you interested,
just send me an e-mail. Our list of special items for the WOC will only be available
for a couple of weeks maximum as quantities are quite depleted.
- I am finishing to reorganize a couple of presentations
that once were available, "Orchids from Rio de Janeiro" and "Rupicolous Orchids". This will
add to another half dozen or so computer presentations, as I am phasing out slide presentations for the sake of
their preservation.
February 02, 2008
- The Price List has been updated, with the removal of out of stock items. New update with new items in
the next few days.
- The new multi-CD is ready and shipping. It includes
Catasetum, Cattleya and Laelia, and
for more information, please go to the CDs page.
Here is an excerpt from what is there.

This is the back cover of the box. The picture shows Laelia

- Due to increased FedEx shipping charges during the last 8 years, which effectively
almost doubled in price, we have to increase a bit our shipping and handling charges for the first time, from US$15.00
to US$20.00. This will not be enough to cover shipping, especially on small orders, but it is a reasonable compromise.
For the same reason, the minimum order also increased from US$25.00 to US$35.00. Thanks for the understanding.
January 17, 2008
- These are the final news until after the WOC.
As we have a presentation to give on Thursday we are only going to be at the nursery from Monday afternoon to Wednesday
morning and on the weekend.
- The new CDs are on the way, should be here by
Monday. If everything goes right, I will have samples on Wednesday at the Conference.
- Changing subject completely, I am starting something
new. For many years, a lot of people have been asking me when I will start taking people to Brazil to see orchids
in their habitats. I always said that, throughout the years, I took several people on trips to Brazil and would
eventually expand to take more people. I think it is about time to press forward with this, and from now one I
will be starting a mailing list on the subject. Right now I am aiming to have one or two trips this year, both
with small groups. I know exactly where to take people and the time of the year when it will be best, just have
to decide the size of this first two groups. The main objective would be to SEE and PHOTOGRAPH plants in their
habitats, as collecting is forbidden in Brazil. Of course I am planning nursery visits and maybe a show or two
depending on the precise time. So, not many details at this time, but if you want to keep being informed, just
let me know and I will add you to the list.
- And finally, I am preparing several new presentations
this year, will be testing them soon. These will have, as always, lots of habitat pictures so it will be (almost)
as good as being there. This is possible as I am finally shifting completely from slide to computer presentations,
which gives me a lot more flexibility.
January 15, 2008
- Here we have the page of selected plants for the
WOC. Quantities are extremely limited as these are usually our selection for future stud plants. With this, the
list will be available for a very short period of time. There are several other high-quality plants available,
but as we can't list them right now people have to visit the nursery for those. And by the way, we are going to
be open on limited periods during the WOC. A new list of selected divisions will be also available in a few days.
- Something new about our lecture CDs. We have been
working on several improvements on these, including translation to Portuguese language. So far, I decided to have
two different volumes, one including Brazilian Cattleya, Catasetum and Laelia, and
the second one with Amazon, Orchids of Rio de Janeiro and Rupicolous Orchids. These will be bi-lingual (English
and Portuguese) and will have a much nicer autoloader (Windows) and navigation. They will also include several
wallpapers (free for personal use). Besides, they are being totally revised. Well, the first one is being stamped
right now, and they will be available next week during the WOC. The second one is still a few months away. Until
the second one is ready, the Amazon CD will only be available as a standalone, and also as an English version exclusively.
These new sets will be available for $45.00, which is much less than the 3 individually, and I am sure people will
enjoy the improvements. So, from now on and for some time, Catasetum,
Cattleya and Laelia will be available individually only as special order.
January 13, 2008
- Happy New Year for everybody. We will have an
update on the website ready by tomorrow. This will include a list of special items for the WOC. These are high-quality
plants available in very limited quantity and never offered by us before, especially a group of coerulea forms.
We won't be having a sales booth at the Conference as we have to speak and also help some of our overseas friends.
However, as we will be in and out of Miami during this time, we are accepting orders for delivery at the time.
See you there.
