Laelia brevicaulis is one of the species of "rupicolous laelias" that actually grow on trees. This puts it together with Laelia harpophylla and L. kautskyi and with them forming a very distinctive sub-group. These plants are delicate, with long thin pseudobulbs that makes them resemble a big Pleurothallis. Cultivation, accordingly, requires more shady and humid conditions than their rupicolous cousins. Flowers of Laelia brevicaulis are slightly smaller than those of L. harpophylla, produced in smaller number and the plants are also much smaller.
